24. Arc Test Setups for Europa Clipper Mission
Several arc standard test setups were developed for the Europa Clipper mission to help understand the internal ESD (iESD) problem induced by the powerful radiation environment at Jupiter. Two different arcing fixtures are shown above designed to simulate 6000 volt surface arcs and point to point arcs. A field probe was also developed to allow measurement of the local electromagnetic pulse. The response was a surprising broadband response including the multi-hundred volt signature above at 2 ns per division. The scope used is my old “warhorse” Tek 7104 1 GHz scope with a built in image intensifier. After almost 40 years it still does the job!
